An interview with Dr. Jack Childs, founder and former director of the Holistic Counseling Program at Salve Regina University, Newport, RI.

A holistic counselor is a professional counselor who...
  • possesses at least a master's degree in counseling from an accredited university
  • is trained in both mental health and holistic principles and skills
  • views the therapeutic process as a collaborative
    relationship between counselor and client
  • honors the client's inherent capacity for healing, wholeness, meaning, and purpose
  • facilitates the awareness, expression, and integration of mind, body, and spirit
  • assists the client in moving toward balance in the presence of paradox and uncertainty
  • brings the fruits of his/her own process of personal growth and authentic living to enhance the counseling relationship
  • may practice on personal, interpersonal, family, group, organizational, or global levels
  • abides by a professional code of ethics.

Holistic practices are based on the recognition that...
  • the universe is a whole composed of interrelated parts and systems, including individuals, groups, and organizations
  • all systems are self-organizing, self-maintaining, self-healing, and self-transcending
  • each entity consists of body, mind/ emotions, spirit, environment, and roles played within relationships
  • wellness is achieved and maintained through balance
  • healing comes from within and happens in community
  • holistic approaches are viable, effective, and complementary to conventional methods
  • holistic practitioners must extend their services skillfully, respectfully, and ethically.
